Wildlife Loop + The Badlands

Buffalo, Ho! After winding our way through the Needles Highway, we took a much more leisurely drive through the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop. It’s 18 miles of plains are lightly wooded areas, perfect for spotting a roving herd. Bessie kept us safe from all of the wildlife, except the Prairie Dogs. She could no longer contain us when those cute little scamps appeared on the horizon. The bison herd was the star attraction of our drive. Bessie braved dirt roads, mud ruts and potential stampedes to get an up close view of these gentle-looking giants. View Photos…

Just a note: Custer State Park has the best t-shirts. They have a great selection of modern designs, colors, fabrics and styles to trick the younger generation into wearing their souvenir constantly.

The next day, we wound through the back roads into the Badlands National Park. It was hot. Very, very hot. Bring water, bring sunscreen, bring your camera because it’s beautiful. Hopefully, we captured the vastness of the landscape, but you’ll still want to see it for yourself. Our final surprise in the Badlands was a herd of Big Horn Sheep climbing up a mountain, grazing in a field and standing on the horizon. Yes, we were surrounded. It was a joy to see them leap about…

Which, you’ll have to come back for later because Youtube is down for maintenance. The one time I want to upload something! Oh well, view the photos…
